Assalamualaikum, Hi, I’m Kurniawati aka Ibu Naya. This is my third year serving SMAN Sumatera Selatan (Sampoerna Academy) as both Cambridge Coordinator and English as a Second Language teacher. Obviously, those jobs are challenging me.
As the Cambridge Coordinator, I am helping Pak Nanang and Ibu Dwi under Academic Team. Last year, our school participated in International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum. This year, we are striving for Advance Subsidiary/Advanced (AS/A) level programs.
They are surely more formidable challenge than IGCSE as they also cover some lessons at the university level. Despite this, we are convinced that we can do our best to conquer it as we have better programs and supported by avid and inquisitive kids and teachers.
As an English as a Second Language teacher, I’m working hard with team to improve the new intake’s English skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. To me, helping the students to excel in writing is the most difficult thing as it involves grammatical accuracy and writing fluency. However, with the better strategies by learning from the past experiences and strong willingness to improve the teaching techniques, all the problems can be resolved.
Our school has been being the Cambridge International Center in South Sumatera for over a year. Therefore, we invite all RSBI Junior and Senior High schools in Palembang to be the participants of Cambridge Examination in May/June and October/November every year. It’s very advantageous for our students to improve their knowledge of Science, Mathematics, Social, Economics and English studies. They would also benefit of measuring their competence and skills of the international standards and have a chance to compete the international students from all over the world.
English, however, is still a big issue in our school; therefore, we encourage all the stakeholders to improve our English skills by at least being consistent in using English as lingua franca at school as English is not only the task of the English teachers, it’s the responsibility of everyone at our school environment. We know we can do it. We can make it happen.
Wa’alaikumsalam.

Dwi Astuti, S.Pd - Exam Officer Of Cambridge Centre

Hi, I’m DwiAstuti, an English teacher of SMAN Sumatera Selatan (Sampoerna Academy). I have been teaching English at this institution since a year ago. Previously, I taught grade X and XII students but now I am teaching grade XII studentsonly.
For grade X students, we offer ESL (English as a Second Language) which is under Cambridge University International Examination (UCIE) care while for grade XI and XII students we offer national curriculum (KTSP).
Teaching both curriculum, IGCSE and KTSP, is challenging for me since their focuses are different. Moreover, being an English teacher in the school which uses English in daily conversation encourage my students and myselfto use English at any time.
In this academic year, school gives me a new responsibility as an exam officer for CIE (Cambridge International Examination). Being an exam officer of CIE is a new thing which challenges me to contribute more to this school. As the exam officer, I help the Cambridge coordinator to prepare all requirements that the students need for their IGCSE/A level exams. Overall, I will do my best as both English teacher andCambridge exam officer.
Winati, S.Pd - Language Dept. EAP Coordinator
Dear readers. My name is Winanti. I was born on 08 November 1987. I love singing very much that someday I wish I could be like her (Jewel Kilcher J), singing my own lyrics (It’s just like another dream that I always keep in mind).
Dear readers. My name is Winanti. I was born on 08 November 1987. I love singing very much that someday I wish I could be like her (Jewel Kilcher J), singing my own lyrics (It’s just like another dream that I always keep in mind).
This is my very first time working in a distant land, far away from home as I come from Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta. I graduated from Yogyakarta State University (UNY) last semester and took this challenge to teach English here, at SMAN Sumatera Selatan (Sampoerna Academy). I am so lucky to be a part of this school.
Being an English teacher is my biggest dream that dares to be true. I do believe that teaching is very challenging for every teacher as they have to always keep up their knowledge.
My expectation is that by the end of courses, all of us (teachers) should have produced students who cannot only pas their exams but who can also live up the life of their society. Finally, remember the English proverb: “If at first you don’t succeed; try, again and again and again!
The best of luck!

Well, let me begin my short profile with introducing myself. My name is Wirda Ningsih and I come from Palembang. I graduated from Sriwijaya University majoring in English Education, so, practically I am one of the English teachers at this school.
Being a member of SMAN Sumatera Selatan (Sampoerna academy), one of the prestigious schools in Indonesia not only in South Sumatera, is a challenge for me. Here at this school I teach English for the XI grade students.
I believe an old proverb stating that do not know means do not care, while do not care means do not love. And if you don’t love it, you will neglect it. Having it in mind I try to persuade my students that learning English is fun to make them love it.
I myself did not like English at first until I found that English is fun and interesting. So, as an English teacher I will introduce fun English lesson to my students in order to make them know it so in the end they will love English. Consequently, learning English is a necessity rather than an obligation for the students. Moreover, the conducive environment and enthusiastic students help me a lot guide the students to become better English learners.
Lastly, English is difficult but who said that difficult cannot be fun and interesting. If you see it as a fun subject, you will learn it in a fun way.
